I am wondering what you guys are thinking about the theme so far...I haven't picked up oon anything but I have a feeling we are getting close. The fact that this book is a classic most likely excludes the broad range of universal themes. Tell me what you are thinking......
I came to the same conclusion about the conflict. I am seeing a general man vs. society conflict developing but was curious if anyone saw anything deeper yet.

I can't really say yet either, but I just started Part 2 and I am hoping that it will be somewhat helpful in starting to reveal or give clues about the theme.
I really couldn't even take a guess yet. =\
I agree with the whole man vs. society thing. Atticus has to defend a black person, and everyone thinks that he is wrong and stupid to do so. So there is sort of a man vs. society thing going on already.
I actually think there might end up being a man vs. self conflict with Scout and Jem. Like Atticus said, he doesn't want them to lose their identity or become angry because of the upcoming trial. The fact that both of them are so young makes them perfectly vunerable for this kind of damage.
man v. society
man v. man
man v. nature
etc...
These are all conflicts, not theme!
Mrs. S gave us two of the main themes last week.
Coming-of-age of Jem and Scout
Prejudice based on differences
These themes are all over the place in this novel!
While I get what you are saying, Mina, those examples were just POSSIBLE themes for us to use.....not neccessarily THE theme. Just my opinion.
I think that the overall conflict is man vs. society. The theme so far, especially with Scout, would be the whole coming of age thing. And with Jem too. They are both really young so having to grow up with this trial is probably very dificult.
As far as conflict goes, I agree with the man vs. society.... but something that is revealed is that Atticus didn't choose on his own to defend Tom. Scout overhears some elderly men talking about how the court chose him to defend Tom and he agreed, I think this is interesting and really shows his character... He is willing to not only defend Tom, but he is doing a stinkin' good job at it! This not only shows how he wants to be an example to his children, but he is also proving to the rest of society his integrity... which leads into what i think a minor theme could be.... standing up for what you believe is right, don't follow the crowd or its opinions... that's my insight!!!
