Who's guilty???

Ok, so we know that the jury saw Tom Robinson guilty but between Mr. Ewell, Mayella, and Tom, someone must be lying. Each of their stories just don't add up.

Who do you think it is and why???

Personally, I think Mr. Ewell is the guilty one. The fact that he is left-handed (meaning he could have easily beaten the right side of Mayella's face) is pretty suspicious. And the fact that he wouldn't get Mayella any medical attention? What kind of father is he?? He just doesn't seem to really know what he's talking about. He seems very confused. Tom, on the other hand, seems very confident in his answers. He does not seem at all worried about telling the truth. He comes across as a genuine man of his word.
Just my opinion....

I think that Mr. Ewell is guilty too.

Mr. Ewell's story doesn't make sense, and it seems like Tom is the more likely candidate when it comes to telling the truth. He's just more trustworthy as a person...

I thought it was understood that Tom wasn't guilty. At least I never assumed he was simply because of the fact that I could not believe that Atticus would defend him if he was guilty. The integrity of the story would be ruined for me if our loveable Tom Robinson was actually guilty and raped an slightly innocent if not rash girl.

"I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: "Guilty...guilty...guilty...guilty..." I peeked at Jem: his shoulders jerked as if each "guilty" was a separate stab beween them"(211)

Then, shortly after, this quote followed: "It was no accident....as I waited I thought, Atticus Finch won't win, he can't win, but he's the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that..."

Unless I completely misunderstood....
