Did something happen in the past?
Atticus has shown us that he has a deadly shot, but why isn't he proud of it? Why didn't he tell his own kids how good he was? Or teach them how to shoot their new air rifles? He has a great talent and he doesn't use it. He could also use hunting as bonding time with Jem and possibly Scout. It's almost as if he is ashamed by it. I wonder if something happened when he was younger that made him dislike hunting. He makes it very clear to Scout that she is not allowed to point the gun at anyone...

Well first of all he says that she isn't allowed to point the gun at anyone because it is dangerous! Not because of something that happened in the past i assume. Also, he tells them several times that the reason he doesnt go hunting is because he is too old. I doubt that something happened in his past, but it is always possible.
I think that he isn't proud of it because he made it seem like he used to shoot things alot when he was younger and is ashamed of killing innocent animals... or maybe he accidentally shot someone.. hmm.. just thinking off the top of my head.
ps.. i know who you are mwahaha
Maybe he was in a war or something and he can't stand to shoot guns any more. I agree with what ho ho ho im a santaclaus said though( man that's realy long!). That he could use it as bonding time. OOOH! I just had an apiphany. What if, since he is a judge, he doesn't approve of the use of guns and kids. Maybe he doesn't think that they're a good mix. Jus shooting out ideas here.
They said he wouldn't shoot because it "gave him and unfair advantage over most living things", and he wouldn't use that advantage unless he was forced to.
I think his "I'm too old" attitude could just be a cover for something that DID actually happen that maybe he is ashamed to share with Jem and Scout.
If he shot someone on accident, he probably wouldn't tell Scout at her age. Don't you think? Honestly how can you be too old to go hunting? Football I can understand, but hunting...I don't know.
I think Atticus was in a war, I don't exactly remember where it said that, but i'm pretty sure... and I agree with the poster, I really do think something happened with Atticus and a gun and that's why he got so upset with scout hwen she pointed the gun at Miss Maudie (i think).... Yes, he got upset because it's dangerous, but the manner that the author portrayed seemed a little rash for just pointing a gun at someone... So, yep! I think something has happened, hopefully we will find out!
Hey hey hey. I know who you are.
I don't think anything happened in the past. I honestly think Atticus is a man who has seen the light and realized life is not all about fun and games but knowledge and family. Yeah!
On page 100 Scout Says: "It was time like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived."
